How to Teach Complex Tasks Effectively with Forward Chaining

In a forward chaining approach to teaching a complex task like tying shoes, the first step is initiated by the RBT (Registered Behavior Technician) with prompting, and then the learner progresses through the remaining steps. However, when the first trial consists of the RBT teaching and prompting the learner for the first step, the subsequent steps in the chain are completed by the RBT as well.

This approach provides the learner with an opportunity to master one step at a time, with the RBT gradually fading their assistance as the learner becomes more proficient. In this way, the RBT guides the learner through each step until the entire task is performed independently. As the learner demonstrates competence in each step, the RBT gradually reduces prompting until the learner can complete the entire task unaided.

This method ensures a systematic and effective way of teaching complex skills, allowing learners to build on their successes and gain confidence in their abilities over time. It is a widely used technique in applied behavior analysis for skill acquisition.
