William Jennings Bryan (1860-1925) was an American politician from the state of Nebraska who was very popular in the Democratic party. That is why he was selected three times to compete for the Presidency of the United States. In 1896, the Populist Party also nominated him as a candidate.

The Populist Party was founded in 1891 to support the farmers and the labor movement in the United States. They believed in reforms that would benefit the common people, such as the implementation of silver coinage to help struggling farmers and workers.

Despite Bryan's unsuccessful presidential races, the Populist Party continued to support him because they saw him as a champion for their causes. Even though Bryan did not win the presidency, his influence on the Populist movement was significant.
