The Importance of Radial Centering in Split-Ball Bore Gauge

Why is radial centering crucial when using a split-ball bore gauge? Radial centering is the process in which the split-ball bore gauge is centered in relation to the circumference of the hole, which results in a more accurate measurement. The radial distance and the arc length are key factors in this process.

When centering a split-ball bore gauge in a hole, radial centering is the process of centering the split-ball probe in relation to the circumference of the hole. This relates to the positioning of the probe with respect to the radial diameter of the hole.

The radial centering method will guarantee a more accurate measurement as it uses the entire circumference for reference. In comparison, the concept of angles of rotation and arc length mentioned in the reference information pertains to radial movements.

If we imagine the probe close to the center of the circle (hole), it would go through a greater angle of rotation. However, a probe closer to the outer edge or circumference would trace a greater arc length. This is because the radial distance from the center to the circumference is greater, thus covering more ground, so to speak.
